Obi Asika, Creative Industries Entrepreneur and Chairman, Social Media Week Lagos, spoke to Connect Nigeria on the goals achieved and the highlights of the #SMW event.
CN: How did the social media week event go?
OA: It was to my mind an enormous success but its best you also check with those who attended. From our side though, we are very happy with the outcomes from the week.
CN: What were the recorded successes of the event?
OA: It was in the ability to connect Africa to Lagos, having over 25 venues in Lagos. Also some of our keynotes – that which we had from the Honorable Minister of Communications and Technology. Keynotes from Jason Njoku, Femi Oke from
Al Jazeera, the Tech Cabal and from Passnownow that launched its education platform… There were just too many highlights to mention.
CN: What targeted goals were achieved as a result of the social media week event?
OA: Our goals are to increase the conversation to bring together technology, new media, government, the private sector and the civil society to discuss important issues and implications for a connected Africa. We were able to do this in a dynamic, engaging and inclusive manner and for that we are thankful.
CN: Unlike the year before, how was the turnout this year like? What changed?
OA: We had more venues, more programming but in terms of attendance we will find out in due course. Our theme changed, our content evolved and our speakers were in their legions.
CN: As a result of this Social Media Week, how do you think Nigerians would, in a new light, start to view the use of social media?
OA: Social Media has already seen mass adoption in Nigeria and will only get bigger. What we look out for is the next generation of enablers, inventors, start ups. I think we will be seeing a lot more in this areas from our people.
CN: What were the challenges the social media week organizers faced trying to organise this event in Nigeria?
OA: Infrastructure, getting sponsors, logistics, delivery – the normal issues… however we were blessed to have enough resources to deliver during the week and we are grateful to all our sponsors and partners.
CN: What should Nigeria expect in the years to come concerning #SMW?
OA: We should expect these event to repeat, for data and information to continually be shared on this platform, for there to be a great level of engagement opportunities for our people through this event.
