#EndSARS Protest
Top on our list is the #EndSARS protests which rocked the nation from October 8-20, 2020. A viral video of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS, a unit of the Nigerian Police Force which was notable as notorious for brutalising Nigerian citizens) shooting a young man in Delta State, sparked off a nation-wide protest on October 8, 2020, as Nigerians called for an end to police brutality alongside calls for a reformation of the Nigerian Police Force. Nigerians shocked the world as they looked aside, ethnic, religious, and class differences to pursue their demands. The major aim of the protest was achieved on October 11, 2020, when the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, announced that SARS had been abolished. Nigerians were not taking his words for it and protests continued because citizens wanted words backed up with action. Things would turn tragic on the night of October 20, 2020, after the Nigerian army acting under the orders of the government, shot live bullets at peaceful protesters at the Lekki toll gate, Lagos State, killing and injuring some of the protesters. #EndSARS would never be forgotten in Nigeria’s history as it has set the pace for a revolution that would bring about a better Nigeria.Connect Nigeria Business Fair
In the 11-year history of Nigeria’s number one online information portal, Connect Nigeria, the company has been notable for hosting the largest gathering of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, the Connect Nigeria Business Fair. This year’s edition would turn out different after the event scheduled to hold from March 6-7, 2020, was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, CN would not back off from its corporate social responsibility as MD, Emeka Okafor, devised a plan to have a first virtual edition of the Fair. The company would make history on August 27, 2020, as the online edition of the Fair commenced and ran through August 28, with thousands in attendance.Sign up to the Connect Nigeria daily newsletter
Nigeria @60 Independence Day Celebration
World’s most populous black nation, Nigeria, turned 60 on October 1, 2020. As usual, celebrations were marked off by an Independence Day speech by President Muhammadu Buhari. Despite the threats posed by COVID-19 on public gatherings, Nigerians did not fail to paint the internet space with pictures on social media and physically through designs at homes and office buildings meant to signify Nigeria’s Independence Day. A remarkable feat achieved during this year’s celebration was the Lagos State mosaic which put Nigeria on the Guinness World Book of Records. With a build-up of 60,000 cupcakes, the mosaic beat the 2015 Singaporean record-holding 30,400 cupcakes.Nigeria Fintech Week
