While it may be old people filling up the political scene in Nigeria, it is good to see that young people are making trailblazing innovations in the country. The emergence of entrepreneurs who are setting new standards and breaking boundaries sure makes for positive development in Nigeria. To celebrate Nigerian women who have been extraordinary in their fields, Tiffany Amber has teamed up with Diamond Woman, an initiative of Diamond Bank, to unveil 15 women for their ‘Meet Nigeria’s Women of Vision’ campaign.
One of the selected women is Uche Pedro; the 30-year-old founder and creative director of BellaNaija.com, an online media company focused on fashion, lifestyle and entertainment with a primarily Nigerian audience. She holds Bachelor’s degree -Honours Business Administration (HBA) from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario in Canada. Among all her numerous awards and recognition, Uche was recently named by Forbes as one of the “30 Most Promising Entrepreneurs In Africa In 2014.
We all know BellaNaija; it’s undoubtedly one of the most popular websites in Nigeria. The encyclopedia for all things weddings, fashion, events and entertainment in Nigeria. The website is popular for their #asoebibella hashtag; a showcase of the different beautiful styles that African fabrics can be made into, and also their massively popular BNweddings; entries that feature beautiful and contemporary Nigerian weddings.
I dare say that with BellaNaija.com, Uche Pedro has set a new standard for both online and traditional entertainment in Nigeria. The popularity of the website and the quality of content has caused a ripple effect in other industries. Wedding vendors from makeup artists, photographers, event planners and outfitters are now increasing in numbers as well as in the quality of their services. For them, an opportunity to feature on BellaNaija is a boost for their image and patronage.
Consumers are not left out. A large percentage of Nigerian weddings and events in the last few years have been modelled on inspiration taken from BellaNaija, and #asoebibella has featured entries submitted by their followers. Undoubtedly, BellaNaija has opened up a whole new world of entertainment for Nigerians.
More than lifestyle and entertainment, BellaNaija is an excellent entrepreneurial lesson for young Nigerians. It is not enough to start a business; focus and quality of service are important to become successful.
