Nigeria is known for so many things, both positive and negative. Despite the country’s reputation in areas of corruption, oil bunkering, internet scams and poverty, Nigeria is undoubtedly also home to exceptionally brilliant minds and industrious people. As we are currently immersed in the fight against terrorism in the north, abduction of school children, mass killings, politicians’ inefficiencies, unemployment and economic imbalance, it is important that we also look at those who have brought us positive recognition internationally. As a people, we continue to celebrate Nigerians who have achieved international recognition through their record breaking pursuits and talents. So here are this week’s Nigerians giving us the positive vibe on the world stage. 1. Professor Wole Soyinka Unarguably one of the most popular recipients of the Nobel Prize, he was awarded the Nobel prize in literature in 1986, making him a nobel laureate. Wole Soyinka was the first African to be awarded the price. He is a widely acclaimed author of several novels and plays, and is a lecturer at various higher institutions in the United Kingdom and the USA. connectnigeria-nigeria-record-breakers2 2. Aliko Dangote Fast becoming Africa’s most popular businessman, Dangote is the first African man to be on the Forbes Richest and Most Powerful list. According to Forbes, he is also currently the world’s richest black man. These two have made their mark in academia, the arts and the business world. Next edition, we will shine the spotlight on Nigerians breaking grounds in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
