Nigerians In Sports: “I Would Like To Fight And Defend My Titles In Nigeria”- Anthony Joshua

World heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has expressed his desire to defend his world heavyweight titles in Nigeria someday. This comes after Joshuaโ€™s rematch victory over Andy Ruiz Jnr on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Joshuaโ€™s is expected to return to London (possibly at Tottenham Hotspurโ€™s ground), to defend his belts against either of Kubrat Pulev (Bulgaria), or Oleksandr Usyk.

However, Joshuaโ€™s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has received numerous offers to stage the British-born Nigerian future bouts elsewhere, including Africa. Joshua, 30, stated that the dream of fighting in Nigeria started after visiting the country this year. If Joshuaโ€™s dreams come true, it would be the first world heavyweight championship fight staged in the continent since 1974 when greats like Muhammad Ali and George Foreman fought the โ€˜โ€™Rumble in the Jungle,โ€™โ€™ in Zaire.

People had been telling me I should go back for ages. I went to the ghettos of the ghettos where itโ€™s not all about egos and beef, itโ€™s about people who are hungry to survive. It was one of the best things Iโ€™ve done. Africaโ€™s rooting for me for sure, so I would definitely love to fight out there.
