  Nigerian defender, William Troost-Ekong, has penned a five-year deal with English Championship side, Watford FC. The Super Eagles vice-captain switched from Italian Serie A side, Udinese, to the English side which was relegated to the Championship during the 2019/2020 season. Financial details of Ekong’s transfer to England has been undisclosed as he joins Vladimir Ivić’s men in their quest for an instant return to the English Premier League.

Ekong, 27, joined Udinese from Turkish Super Lig side, Bursaspor in 2018, and featured 66 times for the Italian outfits before moving to Vicarage Road. The Nigerian centre back has been handed his favourite number 5 shirt and has expressed his delight at joining the Championship side. Watford who has had Nigerian players such as Odion Ighalo and Isaac Success in their books secured the signature of the Nigerian defender to strengthen their quest for a return to the EPL owing to his experience at club and international levels.

Currently, the Hornets sit on the fifth spot in the Championship table with 7 points after two wins and a draw in their first three league games. With the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations bronze-medalist joining Ivic’s men, they have to sustain or boost their tempo to stand a chance of making it to the English topflight football league. Ekong who is a very vital part of Gernot Rohr’s led Super Eagles is expected to feature for the Nigerian national team when they confront 2019 AFCON champions, Algeria on October 9, replacing Ivory Coast who pulled out and Tunisia, on October 13, (friendly matches) in Austria during the FIFA international break for October 2020.
