  AYG-logo   Nigeria, contingent to the African Youth Games, the African version of Youth Olympics, has won three gold medals. The tournament started last week in Gaborone, Botswana and will come to an end next Saturday. Chika Joy Amalaha set the ball rolling by bagging the first gold medals for team Nigeria at the event. She set a new African record, lifting 87kg, on her way to victory in the 58kg weight lighting event. She followed her gold-winning performance with another outstanding performance in the clean and jack category thus lifting 102kg to set another African record. Emmanuel Inemo Appah, buoyed by Chika’s feat, produced another wonderful outing in the 56kg boys’ weight lighting event by grabbing the gold medal. Furthermore, Nigeria’s badminton team defeated Egypt 3-0 and South Africa 3-1 in the semi-final and final respectively to record another gold medal for team Nigeria. The team also annihilated the hosts, Botswana 5-0 and Mauritania 3-0 in group stages and quarterfinals respectively.   Nigeria has also booked a place in the final of the boys’ table tennis event whilst the girls won the bronze medal in their event. The U-15 Football team brushed the host team aside with a 2-nil win on Friday before playing a stalemate with their Malian counterparts the following day.
