Commonwealth wrestling champion, Odunayo Adekouroye (57kg) has moved one place up in the latest global wrestling rankings.

Adekuruoye is now the second best wrestler in the world in her weight class (57kg), while another Nigerian, Blessing Oborududu, who is nine-time African champion, climbed to number four in the world in the 68kg category.

The latest ranking which was released by the United World Wrestling, saw Adekouroye, who was a bronze-medalist at the World Championships in Kazakhstan last month (September 2019), place second with 73 points, three points behind Ningning Rong of China, who won the 2018 World Championship. Norwegian Grace Bullen placed third with 66 points, 7 points behind the Nigerian.

For the 68kg category, Oborududu, equally a Commonwealth gold medalist, placed fourth with a total of 48 points. The duo of Blessing Onyebuchi (76kg) and Mercy Genesis (50kg), who are currently participating in the inaugural edition of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) World Breach Games in Doha, Qatar, are ranked 15th and 18th respectively.

For the 65kg class, Commonwealth champion, Aminat Adeniyi, rated 20th in the world. Ranked 12th in the 65kg class is African champion, Sunmisola Balogun, with 18 points. While Emmanuel Ogbonna John, placed 14th for the 74kg weight class in the men’s freestyle category. Three-time African champion, Ogbonna, is the only Nigerian male wrestler to make the top 20 across the 10 weight wrestling classes.
