According to Punch Newspaper, three Nigerian youth tennis players have qualified for the finals of various categories at the ongoing International Tennis Federation West and Central African Circuit in Togo.
Martins Abamu earned a hard-fought win over Frederick Coulibaly of Benin Republic 6-4, 7-5 in the semi-finals of the boys’ U-16 category to set up a final date with Antoine Gbadoe of Togo, who defeated Nigeria’s Godsgift Timibra 7-6, 7-5 in the other semi-final.
Adebayo Adetunji produced a comprehensive 6-2, 6-2 semi-final win over Marie Ange of Cote d’Ivoire in the girls’ U-16 category. She will square up against Joanne Celestine of Gabon, who narrowly edged Nigeria’s Angel McCleod with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win after a long duel, in the final.
Also in the boys’ U-14 category, Michael Oshewa crushed Danielle Goutjinou of Togo 6-3, 6-3 but his compatriot Ayoola Michael fell 6-4, 6-3 to Ehaya Isaac of Cote d’Ivoire.
