Oriuwa placed 37th on the Macleans power list.
Canadian-based Nigerian Physician Chika Stacy Oriuwa has made the list of the 50 most influential people in Canada. Oriuwa who was raised in Brampton attended the St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School and broke a graduation record of being the first black woman to be sole valedictorian of the academic institution’s 179-year history. In the 1980s, her parents Stephen and Catherine Oriuwa emigrated from Nigeria to Canada.
Oriuwa placed 37th on the Macleans power list which is meant to rank the most influential people in the North American country. The Nigerian, who is a resident physician at the University of Toronto, is also a successful spoken word artist. Her 2017 release spoken word poem, Woman, Black, gained over twelve thousand views on YouTube. She is also popular for being passionate about schemes aimed at inspiring young women around the world, something she derives fulfilment from.
Prior Oriuwa’s inclusion in the Macleans power list, she was picked by toymaker, Mattel, as part of the brand’s Barbie Role Models Program, owing to her tireless efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Oriuwa has a Barbie doll created in her likeness.
“It was such a full-circle moment for me, as a young girl who played with Barbies and always really wanted to see myself reflected. Not only as a child who wanted to be a physician but as a young Black girl,”Oriuwa said in an interview after being selected in the Barbie Role Models Program.
