One-time Dean for the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Campus, Professor Ilesanmi Adesida, was appointed and has resumed as the Vice Chancellor of that campus. The Nigerian-Born, US- educated Professor was named VC in May. The decision was approved by the Campus Board of Trustees later that month, and he resumed on August 16.
Professor Adesida was a finalist for the position with another colleague, Ruth Watkins, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Professor Adesida was born in Ifon, Ondo State in 1949, he read Electrical Engineering from the University of California in Berkeley, where he obtained his BSc, MSc and PhD in 1974, 1975 and 1979 respectively.
He has held several academic positions, including research associate at Cornell University, New York, between the years 1979 and 1984. He was also the head of Electrical Engineering Department at Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Nigeria. He returned to the United States in 1987 and has been at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Campus, where he has held various engineering positions as a professor. He is a naturalized American physicist, and an expert on nanotechnology.
