#NigeriaDecides: The Accreditation Process

President Goodluck Jonathan is presently in his hometown polling station in Otuoke, Bayelsa State to accredit himself and his wife, Patience for his re-election bid. There were initial problems with the new voting technology but it was later resolved and he was successfully accredited. While waiting, he reportedly advised the crowd to be patient with the system no matter the pains encountered. “It’s the first time we are using this technology; PVCs (Permanent Voters Card), card readers so it expected to have its challenges. I am not worried.” He also added that he would return again, once voting proper commences. However, the main opposition candidate for the presidency, Muhammadu Buhari had no problem getting accredited in his hometown of Daura, in northern Katsina State. All over the country, prospective voters are lining up at their respective polling stations to be accredited in order to vote. Some have been successful but there have been reports of some centres being unable to commence accreditation because the protective seals on the card readers were not removed thus preventing it from registering the voters’ fingerprints – causing delay. There have also been reports of unavailability of card readers in some polling stations in Abuja. Despite all these, INEC has assured all Nigerians that no matter what happens, they are prepared to conduct a free and fair election today. All hands remain on deck as Nigerians and the world await the outcome of this highly anticipated presidential election. Nigeria must move forward to a great future and today will determine whether we do or not.
