The battle for the seat of the President of Nigeria will come to an end this evening, 30th March, 2015. The winner will be announced at the end of a press briefing by the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega in the country’s capital, Abuja. The briefing was split into two sessions; the first which started at 12 pm included the election results from 8 states and the FCT. The PDP is presently in an early lead with 2,332,734 votes while APC has gained 2302,978 votes. The second half continues at 8 pm. At the end of the briefing, the candidate with the highest number of votes will be declared the winner. However, this depends solely on his gain of 25% of votes in two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states. This is to ensure a geographical spread of support across the country because Nigeria is divided along religious and ethnic lines. President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to exercise patience as they wait for the Independent National Electoral Commission to collate and announce the results of Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections. We look forward to the results of this highly anticipated election and urge fellow Nigerians to receive the news in a peaceful manner. No matter who wins, we must endeavour to be peaceful and united. May the best candidate win!
