The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) is the biggest music event in Africa. The 1st edition was hosted by Nigeria in 2014, and its 6th edition, AFRIMA 2019, will hold in Lagos from the 20th to 23rd of November. The Africa Union Commission and the International Committee of All Africa Music Awards revealed the news on the 12th of September.
Several African artistes will be contending against each other to win in 36 different award categories. The artists with the highest number of votes from their fans will determine the winners. Winners will also receive a 23.9-carat gold-plated AFRIMA trophy.
With 8157 entries, the number of submissions for this year is 148 entries more than the number of entries sent in 2018. West African submissions make up an impressive 38% of the total number of entries from all over Africa.
The awards are in the Regional and Continental categories. Some of the most interesting Nigerian nominations are in the Continental category. Kizz Daniel, 2Baba, and Tiwa Savage will be competing for Best Artiste, Duo or Group in African Contemporary, while the three princes of Afrobeat: Davido, Burna Boy and Wizkid will be competing for Artiste of the Year. The three superstars are also going head to head for Song of the Year in Africa, with the songs: Blow My Mind by Davido, Fever by Wizkid, and On The Low by Burna Boy. Furthermore, there’s an interesting competition between Fireboy DML and Rema. The two newcomers will be competing for the Most Promising Artiste in Africa Award.
AFRIMA 2019 has been tagged ‘Feel Africa’ and is sponsored by the Ministry of Information and Culture and the Lagos State Government. ‘Feel Africa’ is an initiative to promote African unity and the essence of Africa through music and culture.
The AFRIMA 2019 voting platform is now open and will be closing on November 22. Nigerians will be competing in 24 AFRIMA categories, so hurry to vote for your favorite Nigerian artists.
