Nigerian para-athletes have once again proved their worth, at the 2019 Lagos World Para Powerlifting Invitational Championships held at Oriental Hotel in Lagos.
Nigeria won all 20 gold medals in the competition, alongside 5 silver and 7 bronze medals, bringing the nation’s tally to a total of 42 medals at the end of the invitational.
With an assertive win as great as this, the Nigeria Para-Athletic Federation has registered its name in the world of para-athletics, as the supreme power in the sport across the globe.
Cote d’ Ivoire and Cameroon were able to get their names on the scoreboard, howbeit, this feat is one neither team is proud of. Both sides won only three bronze medals apiece, while Ghana clinched two bronze medals in the competition.
Guinea, Tanzania and Mali, the other teams in the tournament, could not make a podium finish in any event at the invitational.
National coach of the Nigeria Para Powerlifting team, Feyisetan Are, lauded the team for a job well done in maintaining Nigeria’s place in the global sport.
“I am happy with what my athletes have been able to achieve on home soil, they all performed excellently well.
“I remember that sometimes last year, I vowed that we are going to host and win this competition and I thank God that it has come to reality.
“I must say that the future of powerlifting in Nigeria is bright, the upcoming athletes really proved their worth in the championships and we will continue to nurture them to stardom.”
