A 2-0 win over Liberia in Morocco and a 1-1 draw against Cape Verde at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, during the last group game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup first phase of qualifiers saw the Gernot Rohr handled side retain their spot in the global log. Nigeria also maintained the fifth spot in the African rankings as the Teranga Lions of Senegal continued with dominance in the African football space, occupying the top spot. Morocco leapfrogged fellow North African side Tunisia to move into second place in the African rankings. Tunisia which now sits third is ahead of fourth-placed 2019 Africa Cup of Nations champions Algeria and fifth-placed Nigeria.

The Super Eagles will be hoping to improve on their recent showings which have seen the job of German tactician Gernot Rohr threatened as the hierarchy in the Nigeria Football Federation are reportedly unhappy with how the team struggled against Cape Verde in the second leg of the World Cup qualifiers at home. Nigeria will feature at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations slated to hold in Cameroun from January to February 2022 while the play-off round of the World Cup qualifiers is scheduled to hold in March 2022.
