Nigeria and Liberia played out a 2-all draw in the 2013 ANC Qualifiers at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia on Saturday.
It was a pulsating game that saw the Eagles pegged back in their own half for most of the game by the Liberians. Buoyed by the presence of their President and fans alike, the Liberians were up for the assault and they took a shock lead in the 8th minute through Omega Roberts.
Nosa Igiebor saved Nigerians blushes and restored parity in the 14th minute. Ikechukwu Uche added the second from the penalty spot before missing a glorious chance to increase Nigeria’s lead.
They were made to rue that miss when CSKA forward, Sekou Oliseh Jabateh, the adopted son of Churchill Oliseh (Sunday Oliseh’s brother) equalised for the hosts in the 66th minute.
The Liberians pushed on for the winner but the Super Eagles had to settle for a draw. As it stands, the Eagles have one foot in the ANC finals and will play the second leg on 12th October in Calabar.
The Head coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi left the pitch, noting some of these problems and knowing that he still has a lot of work to do. He said: “The moment I correct these things we shall have a solid team. The result was not a bad one although we threw away our victory. I would not complain if opponents work for their goals but it pains when you have the chance to win and through your own carelessness you blow it. That’s why I’m not happy with the way it ended but 2-2 away is not a bad result but we can be better.”
Liberia will face Ghana on Wednesday in a friendly match while the match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Pharoahs of Egypt scheduled for Wednesday has been cancelled.
