Nigeria U-17 team has progressed to the quarter-finals of the FIFA under-17 World Cup in Chile after hammering Australia 6-0 in the round of 16 in the early hours of today. The Golden Eaglets, who are the defending champions, ran into a two-goal lead within twenty-five minutes of play. Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead after 22 minutes; nutmegging defender, Kye Rowles before cooly slotting the ball past goalkeeper, Duro Dragacevic. Captain Kelechi Nwakali scored the second from the spot after forward Funsho Ibrahim Bamgboye was hacked down by Rowles and Jonathan Vakiritzis but replays showed the foul happened on the edge of the box. Osimhen, who is chasing history as tournament’s golden boot award winner, scored again in the 73rd minute and completed his hattrick after 79 minutes. Edidiong Michael Essien and Samuel Chukwueze completed the rout in the dying minutes. Emmanuel Amunike’s boys are now favourites to win the World Cup for a fifth time and will have to wait to know their next opponents in the final 8.
