After a well-deserved win for Nigeria on Friday, the reverse leg of the match-up saw the Super Eagles meet the Indomitable Lions in Yaounde on monday, September 4th. Following what seemed like a brawl of champions, the game ended in a stalemate, completely crushing the hopes of Cameroon for Russia 2018. The draw has kept Nigeria in the lead in Group B with 10 points, one more point behind to qualify for the World Cup Finals. The Eagles dominated the first half of the game with a 1-nil lead, the Lions equalised in the second half from a penalty shot. In the first quater, the Eagles almost took charge of the game when a free kick from Victor Moses all but resulted in an own goal against Cameroon. Cameroon retaliated with a good attack, but their efforts fell within an inch of succeeding at a goal. 30′ minutes into the game, Moses Simon scored Nigeria’s first goal from an Ighalo assist just after a goal sprawl. In the 32nd minute, Ighalo came just an inch away from doubling the lead. Moses and Ighalo throbbed the Cameroonian side causing an unset in their defence. In the second half of the game, the Nigerian players were at it again, especially Moses who kept threatening the Cameroon defense. The Eagles all but doubled the lead on the 63rd minute after Ighalo failed to drive the ball into the net from a Moses assist. In the last quater of the game, Cameroon equalised with Abubakar scoring from the spot after Ezenwa fouled a Cameroonian player inside the box. In the 81st minute, Nigeria almost clinched the lead but Moses failed to score after maneuvering a free kick. Cameroon also came close to taking the lead around the 85th minute, but Ezenwa made a brilliant double save before getting injured. NFF President Amaju Pinnick had this to say; “This was the toughest World Cup qualifying group in Africa and the Super Eagles have been excellent. I praise them for their efforts since the qualifying campaign started and I want them to go for the three points against Zambia so that we wrap up the ticket quickly without further delay. “Everyone called it the Group of Death, but we are alive to tell the story, and a very good story at that. We await Zambia and I believe the sweet story will be completed in great style.” It has not been an easy one for the Eagles so far, but throughout we’ve seen them take on Africa’s best and prove themselves behemoth. So I think it’s safe to say, the Eagles are in Russia already.
