In a virtual meeting attended by the NFF led by President Amaju Melvin Pinnick, his two vice presidents, and the Secretary-General, representatives of the 20 clubs in the Nigerian elite league division, and officials of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, it was decided that the initial resolution reached by the League Management Company and the Club Owners Association to adopt the PPG system will be upheld as it is the best way to end the season which has been brought to a premature end by the coronavirus pandemic. The unwillingness of Lobi Stars of Makurdi, Enugu Rangers, and Akwa United to accept the PPG system after a virtual parley by the LMC and club owners on Monday, June 22, 2020, meant the NFF had to intervene and solve the problem. During Wednesday’s meeting, 18 out of the 20 clubs in the league, including Lobi Stars who initially rejected the PPG now accepted it after understanding the situation better. However, Enugu Rangers and Akwa United still opposed the rule.

With this decision, league leaders Plateau United and last season champions, Enyimba FC who are placed fifth on 36 points (13 points behind Plateau United who are on 49 points)but with five outstanding matches, have both earned the qualification ticket to represent Nigeria at the CAF Champions League in the 2020/2021 season. Also, Rivers United and Kano Pillars will compete in the CAF Confederations Cup for next season. No club was promoted or relegated as it was difficult to make that decision owing to the fact that there were still 13 matches to play, and the Nigeria National League (NNL) just had five matches with some clubs still on just three games.
