  Netflix has announced the appointment of a new director of payments for Africa in the person of Ebi Atawodi, former comms head at Etisalat (formerly 9Mobile). Netflix is slowly testing the waters in the African market as well as other uncharted waters of the global markets as far as the Middle East.

Atawodi would now oversee and ensure payment solutions for Netflix’s presence in Africa in view of growing competition from Showmax. Netflix leads the way in terms of SVOD and the cultural acclaim it has earned in the past few years amongst Africa’s middle class mirrors the one it holds in the US. Netflix is a market leader in Nigeria but it is facing stern competition from Showmax, iROKOtv and AirtelTV. The big competition for SVOD platforms these days is for content and subscribers. It seems the process of scaling Netflix’s influence in the Nigerian market in the mould of what was achieved at Uber.

Atawodi will be joining from Uber West Africa where she worked as general manager and then head of product (payments) at Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She had been in the role for six years prior to her appointment. Before then she had been head of corporate communications and policy at Etisalat. A graduate of the University of Nottingham, she was a founder and creative director at Inden from 2008-12. Since last year she has been a product advisor at Origin.
