I wish to inform you that Netflix has acquired “Mokalik” and some other of my films.
Kunle Afolayan
American media services provider, Netflix, has acquired the “Mokalik (Mechanic)’’ movie from the stables of award-winning film director and producer, Kunle Afolayan. The news was disclosed by Afolayan during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the recently concluded French-Nigerian Cinema Days held from July 2-3 at the Alliance Francaise, Ikoyi, Lagos. However, Afolayan mentioned that the official release date on Netflix has not been made public.
Other movies from the producer such as “October 1”, have equally been taken by the online streaming platform. The acquisition of the movie is part of Netflix’s aggressive interest in African movies, which are richly talented with untapped resources. Backed by its $15 billion budget to secure quality content globally, the move fosters Netflix’s aim to serve its African audience with original content. Kunle is the second Nigerian whose movie has been bought by the media service providers, after Genevieve Nnaji’s hit movie, “Lionheart”.
Mokalik
“Mokalik” features popular Nigerian musicia, Simi, in her debut acting role. The movie also stars Tobi Bakre, Ayo Adesanya, Faithia Williams, Femi Adebayo, Lateef Oladimeji, and comic actors such as Wale Akorede (Okunu), Dayo Akinpelu (Alabi Yellow), and Ayo Ogunshina (Papa Lolo). Without doubt, the film is one not to miss for Nollywood fans.
Written by Tunde Babalola, “Mokalik” is set in an automobile repair workshop (mechanic village). It tells the story of Jaiye, an eleven year-old boy from the middle class suburb, who decides to find his path in life as an apprentice at a mechanic workshop. When his father arrives to take him home, Jaiye is left to decide whether he wants to return to school and abandon his plans of being a mechanic or take on his apprenticeship full time. Happenings in the Nigerian local auto repairs industry serves as Afolayan’s motivation for making the movie.
Visiting the mechanic workshop after about fifteen years opened my eyes to a lot of things that I believe the world should know about our local auto car repairs industry.
Afolayan
The acquisition of the movie is a great leap forward for Kunle Afolayan, son of famous theater film director and producer, Adeyemi Josiah Afolayan, popularly known as Ade Love. Prior to his venture in film making, Kunle Afolayan majored in Economics and worked in a bank, while acting part-time. He has been active in the Nollywood movie industry since 2005 and has made several popular movies such as The Figurine: Araromire” and “Phone Swap”, among others. His movies have featured some of the best acts in the African film industry like Ramsey Noah, Nse Ikpe Etim, Joke Silva, and the legendary Chika Okpala. “The Figurine” brought Afolayan to the limelight, winning five awards in the African Film Academy and witnessing incredible success at movie theaters.
