The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has unveiled the Nigerian government’s policy statement on safety of air operations in the country. The policy was signed by the Director-General of the Authority, Captain Muhtar Usman. The aim of the policy is to ensure improved safety and security in air transport in Nigeria and to consolidate on the standard safety status which Nigeria has attained. ThisDay Newspaper reported that this high standard of safety prompted the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to recognise and certify Nigeria as a Category One safety status nation. According to a statement issued by NCAA and made available to ThisDay Newspaper, this state policy statement on safety had been done in compliance with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 19 on Safety Management, which was adopted by the ICAO Council on the February 25, 2013, but became effective on the November 14, 2013.
