Following their average performance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has performed an in-house appraisal and announced changes to the coaching staff of the senior men and women’s basketball teams. NBBF spokesman, Afolabi Oni told TheCable that the federation made the decisions based on their findings from accessing the recent activities of the teams. The duo of former Ebun Comet players, Dominic Okon and Ogoh Odaudu have been appointed as D’Tigers coaches. They will both replace former assistant coaches, Abdulrahman Mohammed and Aderemui Adewunmi. Okon, who is currently an assistant coach at Wichita State University, Kansas, was part of the Nigerian squad of D’Tigers that qualified Nigeria for her first ever FIBA Men’s World Cup in 1998. Odauda, on the other hand, was a member of the D’Tigers team 2003 squad that won the Silver medal at the FIBA Afrobasket championship in Egypt. He also let then Royal Hoopers of Port Harcourt to national league glory in 2011 and 2012.

D’Tigress

Sola Shomala, a former D’Tigress captain will come in as a replacement for Ochuko Okworogun in the women’s team. Shomala captained the 2003 and 2005 FIBA AFrobasket winning team, and also won the FIBA Africa Women Club Championship trophy with First Bank 15 years ago. The new assistant coach who is also currently the First Deepwater Basketball Club coach will be assisting Sam Vincent (head coach) and first assistant coach Peter Ahmedu in managing the Nigeria senior women’s basketball team.
