Food poisoning is an illness brought about by food we eat. Food-borne illness can at times can be life-threatening.

Causes and symptoms of food poisoning

It can be caused by eating food from school canteens, street food, restaurants, picnics, or at large social functions like weddings and burial ceremonies. A very common cause of food poisoning is harmful bacteria, which include parasites, viruses and toxins. The symptoms of food poisoning include stomach pain, diarrhea, dry mouth, vomiting, tears in the eyes, dizziness, abdominal cramps and in extreme cases (of which you should notify a doctor immediately) partial loss of vision or speech, sweating, mental confusion, difficulty in swallowing food, muscle paralysis, fever, excessive salivation. Food poisoning  triggers dehydration, so it is important to take lots of fluid to stay hydrated and also flush away the toxic materials. Here are a few natural remedies to cure food poisoning.

Ginger & Garlic

Ginger has always been used for the treatment of various  ailments due to its powerful therapeutic and preventive effects. It improves absorption and assimilation of essential nutrients and aids digestion. These qualities ensures it works as a quick remedy for nausea and vomiting, giving you instant relief. You can grate ginger, put it to boil for a couple of minutes and add honey or sugar. Drink it as tea or alternatively eat the raw ginger slices. Garlic is also  a very effective agent in fighting food poisoning due to its strong antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It relieves symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. If you can stand the smell of garlic, then chew the garlic clove raw, swallowing it with water.

Bananas

Bananas are rich in potassium and that helps the body replace nutrients lost during diarrhea and vomiting. It is made up of soluble fiber that helps firm up stool by absorbing water. Eat a ripe banana or mash it up if you can’t chew.

Honey

Honey also contains anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that are helpful in treating  food poisoning symptoms. It also controls the formation of excess acid in the stomach. It can be taken in it’s pure form as it is a natural remedy that also is sweet to taste, it can be included in teas.
