The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, has stated that the monthly allowance of corp members serving the nation has been increased from N19,800 to N33,000. This news was made public by the director-general during a working visit to the NYSC secretariat in Bauchi State. The topic of increasing corps members allowances have drawn so much debate in recent times especially when the welfare of young Nigerian graduates (the country’s future and most productive population) who are deployed to serve the country in regions far from their respective homes, region, or even cultural affiliations is brought into the question.

Brigadier General Ibrahim noted that the allowance increment is in line with the federal government’s approval of a new minimum wage for civil servants in Nigeria from N20, 000 to N30, 000. He went further to note that provisions have been made in the 2020 national budget for the new allowance and payment would take immediate effect once the appropriate national authorities release funds for it. It will be recalled that back in September 2019, during an official visit to the NYSC orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos State, Ibrahim had hinted that should the new minimum wage be approved by the federal government, the allowances of corp members popularly referred as allowee by serving youth, would be no exception.
Your monthly allowance would be increased immediately the Federal Government starts the payment of the new minimum wage to all public servants nationwide…Eforts are in top gear at all levels to ensure adequate welfare for all corps members.

News of corp members allowance increment has equally been confirmed by Mr. Sunday Dare, the honourable minister of youth and sports development. The government of President Muhammadu Buhari since April, 2019, signed the new minimum wage bill into law after much debate from the public as regards the issue in a Nigeria whose economy was recently hit by a devastating recession. After the approval by the government, there has been positive change as regards the issue, prompting implementation from some state governments and federal parastatals.
Corps members nationwide met the news of increment of their monthly allowance with so much jubilation. They have had to make do with just 19,800 which undoubtedly is very little when the day-to-day expenses attached to living in Nigeria are brought into question.

Reacting to the news, Eze Paschal, a corp member serving in Akwa Ibom while entertaining questions from Connect Nigeria’s correspondent, praised the Nigerian government for increasing their allowance, and believes the government can do better as regards the welfare of corps members in the state and the whole of Nigeria.
It is a nice development and far much better than what we used to be paid. I hope there will be no delay in implementation…The government can do better than this but we must not fail to loose sight of what we have already.
