  High profile Nigerian athletes are presently in Lagos State for the Tokyo 2020 National Olympic Trials event at the Yaba College of Technology. The event which commenced on Thursday, June 17th, 2021, saw a huge array of stars including Nigerian sprint queen, Blessing Okagbare, who is running in Nigeria for the first time since 2016, Ese Brume, Tobi Amusan, among others.

Nigerian shot put king, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi alongside US-born Nigerian hammer throw African Record holder, Annette Echikunwoke, are also part of athletes presently in Lagos in the quest for tickets to the global showpiece. Annette Echikunwoke has never been to Nigeria before, and she was spotted with all smiles as she looks to improve on her Personal Best of 75.49m, but will have to wait for Day 2 of the event just as the likes of Chioma Onyekwere, Dotun Ogundeji, Sade Olatoye because no field event was held on the Day 1. However, the track events of Day 1 did not come short of expectations as Okagbare cruised to victory in the final of the women’s 100m in a time of 10.63 seconds. But for a tailwind of +2.7, Okagbare’s time would have seen her emerge as the World Lead, African Record, and National Record holder with her time.

Okagbare in the semi-final had set a Nigerian Olympics Trials record since 2011 after she ran under 11 seconds to the thrill of spectators, finishing the race in 10.99 seconds. Rosemary Chukwuma (11:09) edged past Grace Nwokocha (11:11) to finish second in the final of the 100m race. In the men’s 100m event, Enoch Adegoke made the headlines after becoming the 12th Nigerian athlete to qualify for the Olympics. Adegoke ran a new Personal Best of 10.00s (+1.2) to win the 100m race. May be an image of 1 person and text He ran an impressive 10.06 seconds in the semi-final before finishing the final in a brilliant manner. In a time of 10.07 seconds, Usheoritse Itsekiri finished second in the final, while Seye Ogunlewe equalled his Personal Best of 10.11 seconds to finish 3rd.
