Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, and leader of the legendary Egypt 80 band, has apologized for his failure to perform at the 2019 Grammy’s as earlier announced.
The youngest son of the Afrobeat maestro, Fela Kuti, who has led his father’s band since he was 14, was scheduled to perform at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 10, 2019, at Staples Center in Los Angeles, alongside some of the biggest names in music, including Alicia Keys, J-Lo and Yolanda Adams, but was unable to thrill the expectant audience after he missed his flight due to a “ticket mix-up”. The singer eventually made it to the awards but could not rehearse for a performance posted.
He posted on his Instagram page:
“First and foremost I have to say I am sorry to all the fans that tuned in to see us perform yesterday but didn’t. I had the weirdest ticket mix up in history meaning I missed my flight and the rehearsals and we couldn’t go on. Big up to Soweto Gospel choir a group that has also inspired me. @fatoumata_diawara__ for holding down our show without me. @lekanbalogun1 @mccoyclothings for making us look really nice on that red carpet @versatilebay for @chefyeide clothes. @egypt80band and our entire team we must keep banging the door till they let us in!! #getthesax”
Seun’s 2018 album ‘Black Times’ was nominated in the ‘World Music Award’ category. He, however, lost the award to the South African Soweto Gospel choir – their third Grammy yet. Others nominated in the same category included Bombino, Fatoumata Diawara, and Yiddish Glory: The Lost Songs of World War II by various artists.
Seun’s nomination is the fifth ever Grammy nomination by a Kuti, Femi Kuti having been nominated four times.
One Nigerian who made quite an impression at the awards this year was Ibra Ake, who won his first-ever Grammy award for producing the critically acclaimed video for Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America’.
