Shortly after GLOBACOM launched their data borrowing service, MTN picked up the baton and launched the MTN XtraByte service that allows eligible subscribers borrow data on credit from the network when they run out of data, and do not have enough airtime to purchase a new data bundle. The cost of the borrowed data will be remitted on their next recharge.
MTN XtraByte offers data bundles ranging from 10MB to 750MB. The highest offer which is 750MB for ₦500 has a validity period of 7 days, while the smaller bundles only last for a maximum of 2 days. The XtraByte data is loaded into a dedicated XtraByte account, and not the main data account.
MTN also allows eligible subscribers to borrow data multiple times as long as they are within their credit limit.
The XtraByte service is only available to registered prepaid customers who have been active on the MTN Network for at least 3 months. Account balance must also be between ₦0 – ₦12 to be eligible for the MTN XtraByte service.
*To check if you are eligible, dial *606# then select 1. * To check XtraByte data balance, dial *606#, then select XtraTime balance.
The XtraByte service attracts a 15% interest rate on cost of borrowed data and subscribers can payback by recharging their account. The cost of borrowed data is first deducted from the recharged amount and the remaining balance, if any, will then be loaded into the main account.
