It was hard to make a decision with so many new releases this weekend, but The Millions is what I finally settled for. My choice might have something to do with the fact that this is Ramsey Nouah’s latest film since he appeared in Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons. Other than that, a Nollywood comedy featuring the hilarious Toyin Abraham isn’t a bad way to end your week.
What is it about?
A conman, his crew of thieves, and the results of their crazy plan to steal a ridiculous amount of money. Ramsey Nouah plays the role of the conman, a man who spends his time drinking and enjoying the company of women. The film is mostly about the consequences of greed, and how the pursuit of money can drive us to extremes.
Who is in it?
The cast is an interesting combination. There’s AY the comedian, Ramsey Nouah, Toyin Abraham, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Ali Nuhu and Nancy Isime. You can rely on these to give a remarkable performance.
Why should I watch it?
The Millions seems like a fun reminder of what an unhealthy obsession with money can lead to. When a group of longer-throat friends put heads together to steal a huge sum of money, imagine all the terrible ways things can end. Has there ever been honor among thieves?
Nigerian storytellers tend to hide morals in humor. If you take the time to pay attention, you’ll realize that the story is a comedy with a gentle but profound lesson. The storyline is an honest and slightly exaggerated reflection of some of the contemporary ills in our society. It’s also worth watching because we all need a good laugh now and then, especially on weekends when another Monday is waiting for you around the corner.
The Millions was directed by Toka McBaror, who also directed the very successful 2018 film Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, which Netflix recently acquired licensing rights to. Toka McBaror filmed The Millions in January and started another project in March called Made in Heaven, a film which will feature Mofe Damijo, Jide Kosoko and Nancy Isime.
