House-of-Gold

An old man is sick, and so his dying wish is that all the members of his family come and live together under the same roof for seven days, or they would be left out of his will. However, what sounds like a wonderful family vacation shapes up like a nightmare, when it is discovered that his ‘family’ includes some unsavoury characters like a homosexual, a couple that only speaks French, a rude child, a fake marriage and two bickering sisters. The movie starts out well, with lots of laughs, but spirals down into a boring and predictable ending. With such salt and pepper characters, it had so much potential to be more than it turned out to be. I expected drama to be taken to a whole new level. I didn’t expect half of the movie to be about Majid Michael falling in love with a house-girl just because she sang in his room. I mean, even at the end of the movie, it was about him and his lady love. They didn’t even bother reading the will, which was the crux of the whole matter. Come on!

This movie was produced by Yvonne Nelson, and this is her third one, so I don’t know whether I did wrong by expecting better. The directing and production was good, the acting was alright, and there were a lot of laughs, but the movie could have been so much more. What I liked: It was really funny. If anything, you would laugh your heart out. The jokes were quite original. Omawumi’s acting  is something to look out for too! PG 13 Duration: 107 mins Genre: Drama, comedy
