Nigeria saw off their West African neighbours in a keenly contested tie in Abidjan.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria booked qualification for the 2022 Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Lady Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire at the Stade Robert Champroux, Abidjan, on Wednesday, February 23, 2022.

A late second-half strike from Esther Okoronkwo was all the Randy Waldrum tutored side needed to book their flight to Morocco after Chiamaka Nnadozie had made a crucial penalty save earlier in the game. The victory marked sweet revenge for the Nigerian team. It should be recalled that the Ivoirians beat the Falcons during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifiers, a result which meant Nigeria did not participate in the biggest sports event in the globe.

The first leg ended 2-0 in favour of Nigeria on Friday, February 18, courtesy of a brace from Ifeoma Onumonu. Nigeria will be hoping to secure the 2023 Women’s World Cup ticket in Morocco later this year by finishing as one of the top four teams in the 12th edition of the WAFCON. The Super Falcons boast an impressive record of winning the continental competition more than any other African country with nine trophies.

Randy Waldrum and his technical crew will be banking on the experience of star players like Asisat Oshoala who missed out from both legs of the encounter due to a thigh injury, OnomeEbi, Francisca Ordega, Desire Oparanozie, Rasheedat Ajibade, among others when hostilities commence in Morocco. The 2022 WAFCON is scheduled to hold from July 2, 2022, to July 23rd.
