Another setback has hit the Nigeria senior men’s football team, as they prepare to slug it out with
South Africa in the coming
2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) decisive qualifier encounter, on November 17, 2018.
Super Eagles striker,
Odion Ighalo, may join the list of players, unable to feature for Nigeria when they take on the Bafana Bafana — due to an injury he picked up in Changchun Yatai’s 2-2 home draw against Tianjin Quanjin, in a Chinese Super League clash on Wednesday.
The Nigerian was on target for the Chinese side for only 17 minutes, before he was replaced by Lasse Vibe, in the encounter that saw both teams struggle to maintain the lead throughout the game.
Goals from Yongpo Wang and Alexander Pato in the 20th and 48th minutes respectively, gave the visitors a great head-start.
However, Changchun pulled a late comeback in the 65th minute via Rui Yu’s goal, to reduce the goal deficit to 1. And, in the 92nd minute, Long Tan leveled the scores, ensuring both sides had a point each at the end of the game.
Ighalo has been in great form for the Super Eagles in their recent
AFCON qualifiers outings — scoring scoring six goals in his last three games for the three-time African champions.
With the number of injuries that have hit the Nigerian squad at a crucial time as this, we can only hope that our goal scoring maestro is not out of action when we meet the ruthless Bafana Bafana warriors.
