Here are 5 things to do when you feel overwhelmed.
Change Your Perspective
The way you approach a situation depends on your perception of the said situation. When you feel overwhelmed, consider all the ways you may be blowing things out of proportion. Remind yourself that the situation has an end and even your thoughts about it are temporary. This will help you to take life less seriously and look at things more objectively.Go Easy On Yourself
We are often our worst critics. That is why we tend to think negatively about ourselves in overwhelming situations and end up compounding our problems. When next you find yourself in a tough situation and you start judging yourself harshly, think of what you would tell a close friend facing the situation. Doing this can help you see all the ways you’re being hard on yourself and find ways to identify how you can be kinder to yourself.Sign up to the Connect Nigeria daily newsletter
Meditate
Many studies have shown meditation to be effective in managing stress and dealing with negative thoughts that arise in difficult situations. Meditation calms your mind by allowing you to observe your thoughts instead of being overwhelmed by them. There are different ways to meditate. You can meditate when seated, while doing the dishes, or taking a walk.Be Grateful
It is amazing how much easier life becomes when we start focusing on the positive instead of the negative. As humans, we tend to not only react more strongly to negative events but also dwell on them. This can be overcome by investing more time in appreciating the positive moments in our lives. Because negative thoughts easily impact us, it is important to put in more effort to get the same effect from happy moments. Think of all the great things in your life and give yourself a daily reminder about them.Write It Out
Writing can be one of the most therapeutic things you can do for your mental health. Not only does it make your thoughts more manageable, but it can also serve as a future reference on how you handled overwhelming situations in the past. When you write, express your thoughts freely.
