Day 1 of the first ever
Making of Champions (MoC) Grand Prix and Relays was exactly as athletes envisioned it would be – staged at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, the event saw athletes of varying calibre go head on with the best in different categories for a chance at the final prize.
Track
men’s 100M
Two athletes distinguished themselves with major wins in both the men and women’s 100m races;
Emmanuel Arowolo, raced to victory in the men’s 100m race and had a big run for his money after he and MoC’s
Jerry Jakpawere awarded the same time of 10.25s (+2.3m/s).
Arowolo was named the winner after the photo-finish was used to separate both athletes’ finish.
Usheoritse Itsekiri came in 3rd in a time of 10.36s.
women’s 100M
Meanwhile in the women’s 100m event,
Mercy Ntia-Obong cruised her way to the finish line in first with a time of 11.24s.
Newly crowned National Junior Champion,
Joy Udo-Gabriel of MoC, placed 2nd in the race in 11.48s, while Team Blessed’s
Blessing Ogundiran was 3rd in 11.63s.
The men and women’s B Final races were won by
Isah Salihu (10.64s) and
Magaret Bolufawi (11.93) respectively.
hurdles
In the men’s 400m Hurdles, luck was totally not on
David Olowookere’s side as he clipped the final hurdle to make room for Gbenga Bakare to win in a time 53.79s.
Ismail Muhammed came in 2nd with a time of 53.88s, while
Christian Martins placed 3rd in 56.89s.
In the women’s category National Champion in the women’s 400m Hurdles, Glory Nathaniel won the hurdles in a time of 57.56s. Joy Abu (59.60s) and Kemi Francis (61.37s) placed 2nd and 3rd in the race respectively while Esther Akinde won the B final in 63.74s.
800M
In the men’s 800m race,
Hamid Sambo did not disappoint as he claimed the win in a time of 1:52.82.
Ogunseye came in 2nd in 1:53.26, and
Sadiq Adebisi was 3rd in 1:54.47.
Yinka Bamtefa claimed the women’s title in a time of 2:08.84 while
Hawawu Haruna and
Aminat Alabi were 2nd and 3rd with 2:09.26 and 2:09.47, respectively.
400M
In the men’s 400m race,Â
Samson Nathaniel came in first at 46.91s.
Yinka Ajayi was the overall fastest in the women’s race, with a time of 53.64s.
Field
In Field events,
Lucky Laju won the men’s Shot Put event with his best throw of 13.30m.
National Record holder in the women’s Hammer throw,
Queen Obisesan, threw a distance of 63.70m to take the win, while
Omizi Sofiat and
Daramola Feyisayo both threw a distance of 53.51m and 51.53m respectively to come in 2nd and 3rd.
In the qualifiers for the men’s Long Jump final,
Arinze Benjamin leaped the farthest in both Pool A and B. He was the only athlete to Jump above 7 meters, with his best jump recorded at 7.65m.
