The Miles Morland Foundation is currently accepting applications for its annual Morland Writing Scholarships.
Read more about Scholarships
Established in 2013 by Miles Morland following his investment career in Africa through Blakeney Management and Development Partners International (DPI), the foundation addresses a key challenge faced by emerging writers.
Recognising the difficulty writers encounter when trying to balance creative work with earning an income before achieving established status, the MMF provides a limited number of annual Morland Writing Scholarships.
These awards are designed to give recipients the necessary time to complete a first draft of their book. Eligibility extends to English-language writers who were either born in Africa or whose parents were both born on the continent.
Funding Details
Recipients receive £18,000 distributed as monthly payments across twelve months. The Foundation may provide additional funding for non-fiction writers requiring extended research periods, potentially extending support up to eighteen months.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must provide a published work excerpt of 2,000-5,000 words in English that has been commercially available. Documentation proving both publication and commercial availability is mandatory. A panel of MMF-appointed readers and judges will assess submissions based solely on literary quality. The program does not support academic research, scientific studies, or specialised works, including religious or political writings, which are ineligible for consideration.
Scholar Obligations
During their scholarship year, recipients have one primary requirement:
- Consistent writing output.
- Monthly email submissions of at least 10,000 new words are required until either book completion or scholarship conclusion.
- Should scholars finish their first draft early, funding continues while they engage in editing and revision work.
