Ex-Super Eagles of Nigeria captain, John Obi Mikel and his Turkish club, Trabzonspor, have both mutually agreed to terminate the contract of the Nigerian midfielder. The Turkish league outfits in an official statement made public on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, confirmed they have parted ways with the Nigerian but failed to give a reason for the premature termination of Mikel’s contract.

Trabzonspor acquired the services of the Nigerian during the 2019 summer transfer window, and has seen Mikel play a vital role for the purple and blue squad, playing 19 times before deciding to leave. 32-year-old Mikel will equally forfeit his remaining wages after departing the club, something that has shocked football fans in Turkey and Nigeria.

Despite the fact that the club failed to reveal the reason behind Mikel’s departure, there are strong indications that it might have to do with the former Chelsea star’s vocal stance about playing behind closed doors despite the pandemic level of the virus in Europe. Last week, Mikel called for the league to be suspended just like in many parts of Europe, and it did not go down well with Turkish league authorities.

Trabzonspor currently top the Turkish Super Lig with 53 points from 26 games. Currently, Turkey has 47 confirmed cases of the virus and no death has been recorded with most cases contacted through foreign visits to countries like the US, and Saudi Arabia.
