Super Eagles and Tianjin TEDA skipper, John Mikel Obi, will sit out the remaining fixtures in the Chinese Super League season due to a muscle injury he suffered while in training. The Nigerian international has been out of duty for the Super Eagles since their failed attempt to make history at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Having missed Tianjin Teda’s Tuesday training, and with no signs of a quick recovery, Mikel was out of action as his side defeated away Dalian Aerbin 3-1, on Wednesday. The skipper will also be absent when they take on second placed, Guangzhou Evergrande, in the final game of the season, on Sunday, November 11, 2018.
“We are in a difficult situation right now. We know the importance of the remaining matches. I am solidly behind the team and I believe the guys will do the job on the pitch and ensure we remain in the top flight,” — Mikel told the Nigerian Football Federation’s assistant Director of Communication, Ayo Olu Ibidapo, before their game on Wednesday.
Mikel has so far, played 18 CSL matches and scored two goals, providing two assists for the Chinese outfit. Tianjin Teda are currently in the 15th position in the 16-team CSL table, with 32 points from 29 games, and must win their remaining league game to avoid relegation.
