Super Eagles skipper John Mikel Obi has opted out of Nigeria’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Seychelles in September.
This decision according to the player is to help aid his recovery from a recent injury he picked up with Chinese side Tianjin TEDA.
Mikel, who captained the Nigeria senior men’s’ football team to the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia placed a call to Gernot Rohr to inform him on details of his recovery and to omit his name from contention for the Super Eagles’ squad that will take on Seychelles next month.
“We spoke together. He is just coming back from injury and he needs to push his club commitments to get back in shape. After the injury, he needs time to get fit again.” Rohr told Kwese Sports.
From all indications, the Super Eagles Technical Adviser will be making his big announcement on the selected players on Friday.
The team is under quite a lot of pressure to defeat Seychelles in order to up their chances at qualifying for the finals of the 2019 edition of the biennial AFCON championships scheduled for Cameroon in June.
