In a public statement released yesterday, Microsoft Corporation announced plans to restructure its phone hardware business to secure resource realignment and better focus. A total of 7,800 positions will be reduced due to this development, primarily in the phone business. The restructuring will incur a charge of approximately $750 million to $850 million along with an impairment charge of approximately $7.6 billion related to assets associated with the acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services (NDS) business. This is another move in a string of developments to better align Microsoft’s priorities. The company recently changed its engineering teams and leadership, made plans to transfer its imagery acquisiton operations to Uber and enable further investment in search as its core advertising technology and service. “We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem including our first-party device family,” cited Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in an email to Microsoft employees. “In the near-term, we’ll run a more effective and focused phone portfolio while retaining capability for long-term reinvention in mobility.” All actions announced are to be complete to a significant extent by the end of the calendar year and fully completed by the end of Microsoft’s fiscal year. The company has also stated that more information about these charges will be provided in Microsoft’s fourth-quarter earnings announcement on July 21, 2015, and in the company’s 2015 Annual Report on Form 10-K.       Source: Microsoft
