Mexican stars, such as Javier Chicharito Hernandez and Giovani dos Santos have been barred, by Mexican coach, Miguel Herrera, from having sex and eating beef. The coach believes this will prevent his players from testing positive to banned drugs in contaminated meat.

In 2011, five Mexican players including Guillermo Ochoa and Francisco Rodriguez were withdrawn from their CONCACAF Gold Cup squad after testing positive for clenbuterol, a banned stimulant sometimes mixed with livestock feed to make meat leaner. The issue was later resolved by the Mexican Football Federation and World’s football governing body, FIFA after it was revealed clenbuterol is often present in Mexican cattle.

Herrera has also called Miguel Ponce to join the squad following injury to midfielder Juan Carlos Medina. Medina picked up an ankle injury in training and underwent surgery. His replacement has since joined the squad. Mexico will play in Group A along with hosts, Brazil, Cameroon and Croatia.
