The app’s popularity on its first day led some to speculate whether it could become a “Twitter killer.” As of Thursday morning, Threads topped Apple’s App Store as the most downloaded free app and became a trending topic on Twitter. Some believe that it poses a potential threat to Twitter, especially as Twitter has faced backlash since Elon Musk took over the platform in October 2022. Recent user anger over a temporary content viewing limit has made Twitter particularly vulnerable. However, some others have taken to Twitter to criticise the app, claiming that Twitter remains the best, for them. On the other hand, for Meta, Threads presents an opportunity to expand its portfolio of popular apps and monetize through advertising.

Threads, from the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, functions as a text-based conversation platform resembling Twitter. Users can post text, photos, and videos, engage in real-time conversations, reply to, repost, and quote others’ posts. The app incorporates Instagram’s aesthetic and navigation, allowing users to share posts directly to Instagram Stories. Accounts on the platform can be public or private and verified Instagram accounts automatically gain verification on Threads. Users sign up using their Instagram accounts, retaining their usernames, password, and account name. They can import their followed accounts from Instagram to easily transition to the app.

One displeasure for some who have explored the app is that while deactivating profiles on Threads is possible, permanently deleting a profile requires deleting the associated Instagram account. This has led others away from the app, for now. Users have raised concerns about data collection, as Threads and Instagram can gather various user information, including location, contacts, search and browsing history, and contact information. Threads is available in over 100 countries and supports over 30 languages on iOS and Android platforms. Only time will tell if Threads becomes a “Twitter Killer”.
