Thus, in a bid to promote gender balance and see to the plight of the boy child, Dr Jerome Teelucksingh, a university lecturer from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, 2018, founded May 16th of every year as the International Day of the Boy Child. Importantly, International Day of the Boy Child is a day set aside to focus on the well-being of the boy child around the globe. The need for boys to feel healthy, happy, as well as valued within the family and the society is the focal point of May 16 of every year.

Furthermore, a letter from Dr Teelucksingh to global leaders and NGOs gives a clear picture of May 16:
“On the media, there are regular incidents in which young, misguided boys and teenagers are involved in crime and violence. If a boy child is neglected or fed a diet of hate and violence it is obvious he will develop into a teenager who is misguided and confused. There is an urgent need to focus on the home and school in order to save the boy child.”

Moreover, the goal of today’s commemoration is to achieve true gender equality around the globe. Also, it is aimed at ensuring that the needs of boys are well-catered to and given equal attention as the needs of the girl child. Sources: International Days Vanguard NGR
