It is best you first understand that stress is a normal part of life. It is simply your body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat and everyone has different stress triggers.
Unconsciously, when you sense danger or any form of threat, your body goes into high gear in a rapid, automatic process otherwise called the stress response.
Surprisingly, even though stress when left unchecked, can lead to an inability to function effectively and cope under pressure, stress still serves a useful purpose. Stress can motivate you to get going after a promotion at work, complete a challenge or even reach your goal.
There are various causes of stress, but generally, being under so much pressure leads to stress most time. This pressure can come either from you or from others.
Some of the causes of stress include:
Fear and uncertainty: This is one of the major causes of stress, it occurs when you constantly worry about various threats. Threats ranging from job loss, job search, terrorist attacks, epidemics, global warming, toxic chemicals, etc. can cause you to feel stressed, especially because you feel like you have no control over those events. This fear and uncertainty can also hit closer to home, from being worried about completing a project to worrying about bills and other household responsibilities.
Unhealthy Lifestyle: Another major cause of stress comes from an unhealthy lifestyle. There are various reasons why people adopt an unhealthy lifestyle, however, regardless of the reason, the truth remains that it is one of the major causes of stress, and in most circumstances, it may increase your stress levels.
Attitudes and perceptions: Your mindset has a lot to do with your stress levels. This means that the way and manner you view the world and the situations surrounding it determine whether it causes stress. The way you respond to situations and challenges when things are good and when you gave challenges can affect your stress level. For example, if you are doing well at your workplace and you are not worried about carrying out projects, you will be less stressed out by a big upcoming project than those who worry that they are incompetent.
Conflicts in the Workplace or at Home: Conflicts might occur at both your workplace and your home due to disagreements about how things should be done. In such cases, you might feel the need to stand your ground to make progress; meanwhile, a lot of hot air will only contribute to your stress levels.
Excessive stress especially from the workplace and home can interfere with your productivity and performance, affect your physical and emotional health, and affect your relationships and home life. On the other hand, it can even determine if you will succeed at a job or not. This means that your stress level invariably affects your whole life. Ensure you take the necessary steps to protect yourself from the damaging effects of stress, that way you can focus on your workplace and bolster your well-being in and out of the workplace.
Taking in Too Much: Another major cause of stress is taking in too much more than you can handle. This happens both at the workplace, in your home, and in your life as well. When you tend to take on too much of both, possibly because you don’t want to let people down. This act can frequently lead to you stressing about having too much to do and most times, you end up not achieving everything you have taken on.
Financial stress: This happens to be a general and major cause of stress for most people all over the world. This is because as humans, you get to deal with financial stress and uncertainty. This could be a result of loss of work, escalating debt, unexpected expenses, or a combination of other financial responsibilities. However, there are ways to get through these tough economic times, ease stress and anxiety, and regain control of your finances.
Conclusively, your stress level and triggers will differ based on how you respond to situations and your personality in general.
