Fortuna Dusseldorf of Germany shot-stopper, Maduka Okoye, has revealed that he could not hide his emotions after making his first debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in an international friendly against the Selecao of Brazil, on Sunday, October 13, 2019.
Okoye, 20, was brought into the game in the 63rd minute of the encounter to replace Eagles first choice goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, who injured his knee during the match. The German-based goalkeeper did not fail to live up to the expectations of the technical crew that had chosen him ahead of Ikechukwu Ezenwa, and adjusted well to the occasion that saw Nigeria finish 1-1 with the five-time world champions.
I thank God for the team and the opportunity I’ve gotten to play for the national side of our beloved country. I cried after the game. I shed tears when I spoke to my father and brother… I didn’t expect to play, I was just sitting on the bench like the last time in Ukraine and I knew I’d have to wait for my chance. I didn’t know it will come so soon but things can be like that.
I grew up watching Dida, he is a legend in Brazil and AC Milan and I felt great. I talked to Ederson and he is also one of my favourite goalkeepers. It’s crazy being on the same pitch with a goalkeeper [whose videos you] watch on YouTube.
