The Lagos University Teaching Hospital on its Twitter handle announced that for the first in Nigeria and Africa’s medical history, a 68-year-old pregnant woman was successfully delivered of twins in its facility. News of the delivery points to the fact that Nigeria must lead the pace in the growth and development of the African health sector which has been heavily criticized for not meeting up to global standards in most cases.
Professor W.L Adeyemo of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital who made the announcement noted that the success of the delivery process for the primigravida (pregnant for the first time) was only possible following an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) conception. The delivery which birthed a male and female twin after a 37 weeks gestation period saw the 68-year-old woman go under the knife through an elective Caesarean section on Tuesday, April 14, 2020.
