Have you ever applied for an online course and never completed it? Or do you wish to take a course and you’re scared you won’t complete it?

Today, I will be sharing 5 tips to help you finish any online course you register for, whether during this lockdown period or after. This pandemic too will pass but you must equip yourself with the necessary knowledge for whatever course of action you choose to do. Here are some tips:

Set a SMART goal:

During this COVID-19 pandemic, many courses are open at a discounted price or even free such as courses on Pluralsight, Product school, NECAPreneur amongst others. These courses are good but not all of them are right for you. You must have a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) goal that aligns with your career goal. This means you don’t have to take every course or same course from a different platform, you’ll also have to evaluate how long the course is available and if it can be achieved with your current workload.

Create a workable schedule:

After setting the goal, create a schedule that will work with your workload that would help you finish the course. The schedule can be for a particular number of hours every day, say 30 minutes -2 hours. Ensure that every day you take the course so that you keep it fresh in your mind and it becomes easier to get it done the next day and finished eventually.

Understand what kind of learner you are:

Some people are auditory learners, they can learn well while hearing only the voice of their teacher; while some are visual learners, they learn better when they can see colourful graphics or the nuances of the teacher; yet others are kinesthetic learners, they learn better through practicals or something they can relate to such as writing assignment and submitting, participating in group discussions etc. Everyone is a combination of these three but we will have one in which we learn best. Once you know how best you learn, you can know what courses you should take and which would be more difficult for you to complete.

Give yourself grace:

Achieving a goal is not an easy feat, it requires a lot of commitment, courage and determination to get things done. When the going gets hard, remember that it’s normal and like every other person who has accomplished a goal, you too can and you will. Space yourself, extend grace to yourself. You’re not a failure for not completing a course (as in former times). Ask for help when it gets difficult, it could be from people you know one-on-one or from social media.

Celebrate each win, whether small or big:

Don’t wait until you land a higher-paying job or get promoted at your workplace before you celebrate. When you celebrate your wins, it causes you to be reflective on your career or personal development journey while making the next goal seem more achievable not because it is smaller in comparison to the former rather it’s because your capacity has been expanded and you have been stretched for where you want to go.

Today I will leave you with this words by Napoleon Bonaparte:

Courage isn’t having the strength to go on – it is going on when you don’t have strength.”

-Napoleon Bonaparte
