The fourth edition of the Lagos International Poetry Festival (LIPFEST), began on Wednesday, 31st October 2018, with this year’s week-long event, set to push the boundaries of collective thinking through disruptive conversations, readings, workshops and performances.
Since 2015, organizers of LIPFEST, have brought poets, writers and artistes from across the world to Lagos, for an engaging event that spurs attendees to a refined thought process bordering on the amelioration of the Africa by Africans.
It is in fact true that words cannot necessarily affect physical existence, however, a simple sentence can change the way we perceive and understand our reality — and, this is what LIPFEST is all about.
LIPFEST 2018, tagged ‘Wide Awake,’
“…examines the growing importance of vigilance in a post-truth era. Conversations will explore new frontiers in the fight for gender equality and identity, racial and social justice and how the concerns of awakening collective consciousness and meditating justified paranoia animates art.”
— Efe Paul Azino, Founder and Director, LIPFEST
The phenomenal South African poet and Activist, Lebo Mashile, could not have started her reading on Friday, 31st November, on a brighter note, as she had her audience gripped with awe at her literary prowess as she discussed the enthralling history of the African continent.
Through colonization, we were sold a lie, one that has become the only truth many know today — that Africa needs to look to the west for acceptance and validation. This foreign praxis has left many young Africans, without the candor of their real African heritage.
Africa is a lot of things, but, Africa is not weak, Africa is not without its identity.
Africa is proud and beautiful, Africa is great, however, we will need to step up and show the world just how exceptional we are as a continent, if we want the global conversation around Africa to change.
Thoughts like this and more are what you will get to experience first hand at the ongoing LIPFEST.
