An international network which hosts thought leaders from around the world will bring together some of Africa’s most influential women this Saturday (3 May 2014) at the Intercontinental Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria. Female leaders from the worlds of politics, business, philanthropy, media, fashion, entertainment and the arts will gather together to empower and inspire the next generation. This is the second time the WIE Africa Symposium is happening and it is timed to coincide with the World Economic Forum Africa. Speakers will come from across the continent and include Nigerian’s first female billionaire Folorunso Alakija, who will speak in a spotlight session, sharing her learnings on leadership with the ambitious and aspirational crowd that WIE attracts. Also speaking are CNN News Anchor Isha Sesay; Global Beauty Ambassador Eryka Freemantle; Supermodel and Africa’s Next Top Model host Oluchi Orlandi; Celebrated Nigerian singer-songwriter Tiwa Savage; and Half of a Yellow Sun actress Onyeka Onwenu. Dee Poku, Co-Founder and CEO of WIE said: “Following the success of last year’s inaugural event in Cape Town, I am excited that WIE Africa is being held in Nigeria as there are very few events that convene a pan African grouping of Africa’s incredibly high caliber women leaders.” She added: “I’m confident that this will be more than a one day conference but an opportunity to look at how Africa’s talent can be at the forefront of development on the continent as well as having a global impact, which is what WIE Africa is all about.” In addition to the speakers, a number of organizations are actively involved in WIE Africa Symposium and have partnered with the event. Among them are: Standard Chartered, Girl Effect (The Nike Foundation), Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Union Bank, Veuve Clicquot, Honeywell, Polo Luxury, Aequitas Consulting. Other partners include: InterContinental Lagos, Temple Muse, EbonyLife, Spice TV, Genevieve Magazine, Ventures Africa, Bella Naija, HELLO!, Connect Nigeria, Afritickets. WIE (Women: Inspiration & Enterprise), founded in 2010 is a global annual conference and community designed to empower the next generation of women leaders. WIE Africa will showcase the women taking a central role in shaping the Africa of tomorrow and aims to contribute to changing any negative perceptions of Africa as a whole by presenting successful African women and innovation.   The day will be packed full of panels and workshops featuring speakers from the worlds of politics, business, philanthropy, media, fashion, entertainment and the arts like; renowned Nigerian designer Maki Oh, Tinsel actor Gbenro Ajibade. Also included, is a musical performance by fast-rising singer Cynthia Morgan. Topics for discussion include: “Retail Ready: Developing African Labels into Viable Businesses”; “A Question of Identity: Challenging the Global Perception of Beauty”; “Pioneering Platforms: Creating and Sustaining Media in Africa”.   Previous WIE Symposiums in London, New York and Cape Town have boasted some of the most recognizable thought-leaders from around the world including Graca Machel, Nancy Pelosi, Iman, Sarah Brown, Donna Karan, Ariana Huffington, Cherie Blair, Jill Biden, Diane Von Furstenberg, Baroness Valerie Amos, Ambassador Melanne Verveer, Ted Turner, Dambisa Moyo, Tamara Mellon, Tyra Banks, Christy Turlington, Nick Clegg, Geena Davis and Aerin Lauder to name a few.
