The Lagos State Government says it has began the building of an ultra-modern seven-floor car park at Onikan in Lagos Island.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Obafemi Hamzat, said this during the ministry’s 2014 press briefing on Wednesday in Alausa.
Mr. Hamzat said the car park, which would accommodate 700 vehicles at a time, was to cater for the increasing population in Onikan.
The project, being handled by DKR Associates, would have an administrative complex to make the administration of the facility easier.
“The mega city status of Lagos confers on it the need to manage its challenges. One of such is the issue of parking space.”
“Within the Lagos Central Business District, there are varieties of parking places that invoke the semblance of an unplanned city. To address the issue, the car park facility building was conceived,” he said.
He, however, said that the project would be managed by the private sector and urged residents to take ownership of all road assets in the state by protecting them against damage and vandalism.
He noted that residents have a moral responsibility to ensure the durability of roads as they were built to serve their movement needs.
